Karate – Injury Prevention, Treatment & Rehabilitation
Following the successful launch of the Martial Arts Sports Symposium UK in 2025, MASSUK returns in 2026 with a one-day multidisciplinary medical education symposium for clinicians, allied health professionals, coaches and athletes focused on the prevention, assessment and management of karate-related injuries and athlete performance.
The programme examines injury in karate across Kata and Kumite, from beginner to elite level, with the opportunity to observe a live karate training camp and participate in a martial arts-based stunt workshop. Sessions will be delivered by an expert multidisciplinary faculty alongside elite athletes and performers including Jordan Thomas, Justin Ortiz and Jewelianna Ramos-Ortiz.

I attended the inaugural MASSUK Symposium in 2025 and found it to be one of the most informative martial arts educational events I’ve attended. The calibre of the speakers was exceptional, covering everything from injury prevention and rehabilitation to elite athlete care, but it was delivered in such a friendly and relaxed environment that everyone felt comfortable asking questions and sharing experiences. I came away with practical knowledge that I have since been able to apply within GBMAT, and I’m looking forward to returning this year. Last year I attended with my son who is pursuing a career in T&O and combine it with Sports Medicine. It was an amazing experience, speakers were well informed and delivery of the whole day was spot on. We particularly, enjoyed the practical aspect of the day with athletes performing their craft, to get an idea what is involved, and see how injuries may occur. I have never seen that kind of interaction and also, a unique opportunity to take part in Taekwondo. I was, of course, a natural! Tongue in cheek. We had a wonderful day and were thankful to be invited.
