A Traditional Korean Martial Art
Taekwondo is a traditional Korean martial art and it’s foundation can be traced to the Taek Kyon and Taek Kyon-Do styles which were practiced during the Three Kingdoms era of Korea (c. 50 BC). The name “Taekwondo” was formally adopted in 1955, and the Korea Taekwondo Association was formed in 1959 thus unifying the nine different Taekwondo schools.
The term “Taekwondo” is a Korean word composed of three parts: Tae meaning foot or to step on, Kwon meaning fist or fight, and Do referring to the way or discipline.
Techniques and Disciplines
Taekwondo is renowned for its powerful kicking techniques, but it is more than that, encompassing a wide range of striking techniques, punching and blocking as well as self-defence, forms (poomsae), breaking boards (gyeokpa) and sparring (kyorugi).
Poomsae
Poomsae are used for non-contact skill development including coordination, balance, timing, breath control and individual practice. They are employed for training, grading, and competition. Poomsae discipline is essential for developing the foundational skills and mental focus required in Taekwondo.
Sparring
Sparring is a full-contact discipline and the most popular form of Taekwondo competition. It involves two competitors, typically within the same weight category, battling in a designated area to score points by landing kicks and punches on their opponent’s torso or head. The main goal is to accumulate more points than the opponent through valid strikes and kicks. Sparring requires agility, strategy, and precise execution of techniques.
Breaking Techniques
Breaking techniques involve breaking wooden boards or other materials to demonstrate power and precision. These techniques showcase the practitioner’s strength, control, and ability to focus energy.
Mental and Spiritual Discipline
Taekwondo also emphasises mental and spiritual discipline, promoting values like courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit. Practitioners are encouraged to embody these values both in and out of the dojang.
The Heart of Taekwondo
At its heart, Taekwondo is a multifaceted martial art that combines physical skill with mental and spiritual development. This combination makes Taekwondo a popular choice for fitness, self-defence and competition. It is more than just a martial art; it is a way of life that fosters holistic growth and well-being.
